It is ranked in the band of 401–500 by THE World University Rankings 2022 and 2021. Also, the institute has secured the 78th and 188th positions in the rankings of THE Asia University Rankings 2021 and QS Asia University Rankings 2021 respectively. The NIRF ranks IITI at 13th place out of the top 100 engineering institutes. It has also remained within the top 3 universities in India for its Teaching Learning and Resources. The sole criterion for undergraduate admission in IIT Indore is the highly selective Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE), considered the toughest undergraduate exam in the world with an acceptance ratio of only 2%. Thus, all IITI students are among the top 1% of India’s engineers.

IITI is known to house best research facilities among all new IITs. Inter-disciplinary research driven academic programmes form a core component of the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in IIT Indore. The Industrial R&D Unit has been specifically set up to provide specialised administrative and managerial support for the operation of sponsored research, consultancy and other related R&D activities of the Institute.
